Well we’re here to bust those myths and reveal the truths. MYTH: All Halloween stores and online retailers sell authentic, FDA-approved lenses. TRUTH: It is illegal to sell Halloween contact lenses without a valid prescription in the United States. Many of the lenses found online or in beauty salons, novelty shops or in pop-up Halloween stores are not FDA-approved. MYTH: People who don’t need vision correction can buy lenses off the shelf. TRUTH: There is no such thing as a one size fits all” contact lens, and a prescription is still required. Lenses that are not properly fitted via an eye exam may scratch the eye or cause blood vessels to grow into the cornea. MYTH: Decorative lenses do not require the same level of care or consideration as a standard contact lens because they can be purchased over-the-counter or online. TRUTH: It is essential to take care of Halloween lenses the same as standard lenses to ensure safe wear. Halloween contacts are considered medical devices just like regular contact lenses and require the same amount of care. These lenses have the color designs painted overtop, thus making them thicker and less permeable. It makes it more difficult for oxygen to pass through to the eye. It can be a very stressful and trying period of a person’s life. There are those crucial defining moments that can throw a world into complete chaos. Exhibit A: The whole Santa Claus” thing. Further down the list is the not so traumatic but equally upsetting visit to the dentist where he finds out he has a cavity and has to get a filling. And right on par with having cavities is that fateful day when the horrible eye doctor tells him he has to get glasses. Wearing glasses could be detrimental to his social life. Let the countdown to the day when he can make the transition from glasses to contacts begin. There are many benefits to wearing contacts over glasses. If your child is an athlete, contacts offer much more comfort and convenience than having to wear sports goggles. The big question then becomes, When is it appropriate for a child to make the shift from glasses to contacts?” Sorry to disappoint, but there’s no exact age. Responsibility and maturity are the key the factors. Wearing contacts comes with a lot of responsibilities and can lead to dangerous consequences if care isn’t taken.
